Around Northumberland

Made famous by the Percy family and more recently Harry Potter, lies the ancient Northumberland market town of Alnwick. This very popular town boasts a magnificent castle as well as a large collection of shops, cafes and restaurants. No visit to Alnwick would be complete without visiting Alnwick Castle or Alnwick Garden. The Castle is owned by the Percy family and is home to the present Duke and Duchess of Northumberland.

Alnwick Castle offers a guided tour of the state rooms, an interactive area for children called Knight’s Quest and a popular café and restaurant. Known as the “Windsor of the North” Alnwick Castle is famous for providing the location for the recent Harry Potter films and offers entertainment, food and a gift shop within its extensive grounds.

Alnwick Garden, created by The Duchess of Northumberland attracts visitors world wide. Visit the ornamental garden or take a tour of the Poison Gardens before viewing the spectacular Grand Cascade. For a meal with a difference, the unique and quirky Treehouse restaurant is worth a visit.

Northumberland also has some of the most spectacular beaches in the British Isles with several castles along the coastline including Banburgh, Dunstanburgh, and Warkworth.

The vibrant city of Newcastle upon Tyne is only a short drive away and so is the Metro Centre - a shopper’s paradise. Over 330 shops located inside, the Metro Centre has 50 restaurants, a new state of the art Imax cinema and ten pin bowling area all under one roof. Perfect for rainy days!

Cosmopolitan boutiques, quirky craft retailers and designer shops are found in Newcastle. The Baltic Centre, the infamous Millennium bridge and the Sage Gateshead music venue are only half an hour’s drive away.
